You can now support Cœur de forêt
From 16 May to 14 September 2017, inclusive, you will be able to round up your purchases by a few cents. 100% of these "micro donations" will be given to the Association Cœur de Forêt for its project "Planter pour préserver les forêts en danger de l’île de Florès en Indonésie" (Planting to preserve endangered forests on the Flores Island in Indonesia).
The aim of the Cœur de Forêt project is to preserve the forest of the Sacrée Wolomezé Mountain and neighbouring forests, via a reforestation programme reintroducing endangered trees such as the Sandalwood.
Through three reforestation campaigns, 100,000 trees will be planted. Cœur de Forêt also supports local communities by helping them to live from the cultivation of forest products, such as vanilla and patchouli, in a sustainable and responsible manner.
"Committed together" - latest report available!
This third voluntary report reviews the main events and achievements in 2016: the progress made on our commitments and the formalisation of our Ambitions 2020, launch of the first Sustainable creation trophies, our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint and of course the launch of the Maisons du Monde Foundation!
A shared commitment
Through our CSR strategy "Committed together!” our objective is to enable the individual commitment of each and everyone.
As evidenced by several testimonies, 2016 was a year rich in projects: partnerships with entities of the social and solidarity economy to give a new life to our "substandard" products, our teams' participation in solidarity leaves for the purposes of the Foundation and the launch of L’ARRONDI to get our customers involved.
Quantified objectives
2016 was also marked by the formalisation of our Ambitions 2020, prepared jointly by all business lines. These roadmaps steer us all to the way of action and define ambitious objectives for each pillar of our CSR strategy. Approved by the Executive Committee of Maisons du Monde, they make CSR an integral part of the Group's ambition.
The first structuring year of the Maisons du Monde Foundation
The launch of our foundation, under the aegis of the Nicolas Hulot Foundation pour la Nature et pour l’Homme (for Nature and Men), was one of the highlights of the past year.
The creation of our foundation honours 10 years of sponsorship of environmental NGOs in Southern countries and structures our action around three thrusts: forests, reuse of wood and citizen mobilisation.

Flashback to our Community Days
As part of our 2017 Charitable Programme, in May Maisons du Monde launched the first round of its Community Days. An opportunity for employees to spend an entire day taking action to preserve the environment or combat hardship alongside a local association close to their place of work!
In Lyon, Marseilles, Nantes and Paris, around fifty employees gave their time to experience a different and meaningful type of team-building day, creating connections with voluntary sector actors and learning about community projects supported by the Maisons du Monde Foundation.
In Paris with Emmaüs Défi, volunteers took part in the association’s day-to-day work with people re-joining the labour market: sorting activities and learning about the ‘Emmaüs Made’ project, supported by the Maisons du Monde Foundation, which aims to boost the employability of people returning to the labour market, by training them in the re-purposing of wood materials.
In Pouliguen, as part of the ‘J’agis pour la nature’ programme by the Nicolas Hulot foundation for man and nature, employees donned their gloves and boots for gardening, and preserved biodiversity and cleaned beaches with Loire-Atlantique CPIE (environmental initiatives centre).
In Bron, near Lyon, again as part of this programme, with Naturama they accompanied a shepherd for the transhumance of his herd of Drenthe Heath sheep. An opportunity to practice shearing and animal care.
In Marseilles, a chocolate-making workshop was a chance to share the experience of a group of young people undertaking vocational training at the employment and integration centre (EPIDE), and the beginning of a partnership.
Again in Marseilles, employees took part in collecting and renovating furniture with the Impulse Toit recycling project, whose activities are supported by the Maisons du Monde Foundation.
It was a resounding success: 100% of participants declared their willingness to repeat their contribution at the next Community Days!

Give away, Give a makeover! Two days for giving a second life to our furniture
At Maisons du Monde we care about our products throughout their life-cycle and are committed to giving them a second life by promoting repair, reuse and recycling solutions whenever possible.
To share this approach and strengthen our partnerships with charitable and social economy organisations supported by the Maisons du Monde Foundation, Maisons du Monde is organising, for the first time, in partnership with the Ressourcerie de l’île recycling facility in Nantes and Emmaüs Défi in Paris, a major event combining decor, the circular economy, and community spirit.
By launching the ‘Give away, Give a makeover’ campaign together, we want to encourage customers and individuals to do their bit in offering a second life to furniture and decorative objects they longer need. By giving them away to recycling and upcycling organisations with a social and charitable mission, they can each prolong the life-cycle of the products and give them a unique value that forges human connection.
Two key events
- On 16 September in Rezé, near Nantes, with Ressourcerie de l’île (90 rue de la Basse-Île in Rezé)
- On 30 September in Paris with Emmaüs Défi (104, 5 rue Curial / 104 rue d’Aubervilliers and 40 rue Riquet in Paris, in the 19th arrondissement)
Three highlights
Product donations: a collection counter will be available to the general public and customers of Maisons du Monde who want to donate furniture and decorative objects they no longer have use for. A more positive solution than throwing away!
Furniture makeover workshops: participants can customise and upcycle furniture with smart and stylish techniques (prior booking required - for more information, visit our Facebook page).
The charity sale of the ‘Maisons du Monde Made in Ressourcerie’ and ‘Maisons du Monde by the Emmaüs Défi Redesigners’ collections: not all furniture had the same fate, some may have been damaged and Maisons du Monde gives these to Ressourcerie de l’île and to Emmaüs Défi. Thanks to the work of the artisan-reclaimers, Maisons du Monde furniture is discovering a second life!
Come and see them soon:
- On 16 September at Ressourcerie de l’île in Rezé for the ‘Maisons du Monde Made in Ressourcerie’ collection: it will be on display throughout the day and sold with all profits going to the association at an exclusive sale from 5.30pm.
- On 30 September at Emmaüs Défi’s 104 outlet in Paris for the ‘Maisons du Monde by the Emmaüs Défi Redesigners’: it will be on display and on sale throughout the day, with all profits going to Emmaüs Défi.
Le Foyer Notre-Dame des Sans-Abri to benefit from L'ARRONDI micro-donation system!
After the Cœur de Forêt association, it is now the turn of the Foyer Notre-Dame des Sans-Abri to be supported by L'ARRONDI in all Maisons du Monde stores. L’ARRONDI is a micro-donation system for major causes: every centime counts and helps to finance projects selected by the Maisons du Monde Foundation!
Thank you for your donations to the Cœur de Forêt association!
From 16 May to 14 September 2017, the Cœur de Forêt association collected more than 140 000 euros from customer donations, exceeding its collection objective.
Your donations are fully transferred to the Cœur de Forêt association and used to:
- Plant 100 000 trees
- Train 600 producers on agroforestry principles
- Make 200 children aware of the need to protect forests
For more information about the Cœur de Forêt association: www.coeurdeforet.com
You can now support the Foyer Notre-Dame des Sans-Abri
From 15 September and up to 14 January 2018 inclusive, 100 % of your "micro-donations" will be transferred to the Association Foyer Notre-Dame des Sans-Abris for its project "Le mobilier de 2mains".
The Notre-Dame shelter's project aims to propose qualifying training courses on furniture repair to persons in the process of professional reinsertion. By offering them the opportunity to learn how to restore wooden furniture, the Notre-Dame shelter has a mission which is therefore both social and environmental. It helps people in situations of exclusion to find a job and reintegrate into society, while at the same giving a second life to furniture which would otherwise have been thrown away!
Two Professional Qualification Certificates have now been created through this project: "Trainer of furniture and decorative object restorers" and "Furniture and decorative object restorer".
This project is implemented with:
- Eco-mobilier for their expertise in the collection and restoration of old furniture
- The UNAMA (the French national union of crafts in the furniture trade) to set up training courses for persons in situations of insertion.
The Foyer Notre-Dame des Sans-Abri is the project pilot structure, which is testing this new system for 3 years. This partnership will offer the association's employees training and the possibility of obtaining a diploma. This initiative will eventually be deployed throughout France for all associations in this sector of activity: they will therefore be able to propose to persons in the process of professional reinsertion a training course recognised by the State leading to a new innovating trade!

The First Maisons du Monde Sustainable Creation Awards!
At Maisons du Monde, we believe that it is possible to create sustainable products without sacrificing style! We create collections that include sustainability criteria, from sourcing eco-friendly materials to giving our furniture or decorative items a second life.
A look back at the first contest
To share our vision and educate the talents of tomorrow, in December 2016 Maisons du Monde launched the first Sustainable Creation Awards, inviting students at French design schools to reflect on the eco-design of furniture or decorative items. The Awards are organized in partnership with the eco-organization Eco-Mobilier, the Association FSC France, the sustainability consulting firm EVEA, and the participation of ADEME and the Foundation for Nature and Mankind.
From December to February, we received 55 submissions from 12 different schools. After a pre-selection by the Maisons du Monde designers, stylists and product managers, a panel of eco-design experts from Eco-Mobilier, EVEA and FSC, supported by ADEME, met to assess the efforts to reduce environmental impacts.
And the winners are…

The second Maisons du Monde Sustainable Creation Awards: discover the 10 shortlisted students
The jury of the Maisons du Monde Sustainable Creation Awards met in late February to review the submissions of students or recent graduates from design, fashion or art schools. The projects that best meet eco-design criteria and reflect the Maisons du Monde style were shortlisted.
In partnership with the eco-organisations Eco-mobilier and Eco-TLC, the association FSC France, the sustainability consulting firm EVEA, and with the participation of ADEME and the Foundation for Nature and Mankind, the aim of these Awards is to promote the young talents of tomorrow, help change behaviours by educating people about eco-design, make the sustainable management of wood a priority and identify sustainable products to include in our product offering.
The nominees are…
50 students participated in the second Awards, representing 17 design, fashion and art schools from all over France. They submitted projects for eco-designed furniture or decorative items. The students used their creativity to reduce the impacts on the environment, without compromising on style!
The jury selected 10 submissions in the “furniture” category and the “decoration” category. At each stage of the life cycle of the product, the students demonstrated their ingenuity, making use of innovative materials (mushroom leather, eucalyptus fabric), sustainable sources (wood labelled FSC®, recycled material) and user-friendly ways to assemble the product.
The students are competing for 4 prizes:
- “Furniture” prize
- “Decoration” prize
- FSC® prize when the product contains more than 50% FSC® labelled wood which meets responsible forest management criteria
- “I Like It” people’s choice prize
“I Like It” contest on Facebook
From 3 to 30 April 2018, the 10 shortlisted submissions are presented on Facebook for the “I Like It” people’s choice prize. People can vote for their favourite project by liking the student’s photo. The winner will win a €500 gift certificate for Maisons du Monde.
The winners will be announced on 11 October in Paris at the official awards ceremony, in the presence of design experts. The prototypes of their projects will be presented to the participants.
Vote for your favourite project!
